| 1 | The Fabulous Moolah1st reign Billed as Slave Girl Moolah. WWE recognizes this as one continuous reign until 1984, folding in the unrecognized 1956-1984 NWA-era title changes. It was defended as the NWA World Women's Championship until May 19, 1984, when Moolah sold the rights to the WWF. | Sep 18, 1956Live EventBaltimore, MD | 10,170 days |
The original WWE Women's Championship was the oldest championship in WWE, with a lineage the company traces to September 18, 1956, when The Fabulous Moolah became the third NWA World Women's Champion. WWE folds the NWA-era title changes between 1956 and 1984 into Moolah's single first reign, officially recognizing it as lasting roughly 28 years (its actual length was 3,651 days). The title was defended as the NWA World Women's Championship until 1984, when Moolah sold its rights to the WWF; it was renamed the WWF Women's Championship and, in 2002, the WWE Women's Championship. Across 59 recognized reigns shared by 29 champions there were four vacancies, plus two periods of deactivation (1990-1993 and 1995-1998). Trish Stratus holds the record with seven reigns; Moolah's first reign is the longest and Mickie James's third (under one hour) the shortest; Moolah is the oldest champion (76) and Wendi Richter the youngest (22). On September 19, 2010, Michelle McCool unified it into the WWE Divas Championship, retiring this lineage with Layla as the final recognized champion. It is a distinct title from the WWE Women's Championship introduced in 2016.
