1 Luke Graham & Tarzan Tyler The inaugural champions, named WWWF World Tag Team Champions after defeating Dick the Bruiser & The Sheik in a fictional tournament final. Jun 3, 1971House ShowNew Orleans, LA 186 days

The original World Tag Team Championship was the oldest tag team title in WWE, established on June 3, 1971 when Luke Graham and Tarzan Tyler were named the inaugural WWWF World Tag Team Champions after a fictional tournament. It was renamed as the promotion changed names: WWWF, then WWF World Tag Team Championship in 1979, the WWF Tag Team Championship in 1983, briefly the WWE Tag Team Championship in 2002, and finally the World Tag Team Championship when it became Raw-exclusive later that year. The WCW World Tag Team Championship was unified into it in 2001. Across 176 reigns shared by 113 teams there were nine vacancies. The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray and D-Von) hold the record with eight reigns as a team, while Edge has the most as an individual with twelve. Demolition's first reign is the longest in the title's history, Edge & Christian's sixth the shortest, Ric Flair the oldest champion and Rene Dupree the youngest. In April 2009 it was unified with the WWE Tag Team Championship as the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship; on August 16, 2010, Bret Hart presented new belts to final champions The Hart Dynasty (David Hart Smith and Tyson Kidd) and WWE retired this lineage, continuing only the WWE Tag Team Championship (which became the Raw Tag Team Championship in 2016 and adopted the World Tag Team Championship name in 2024). This is a distinct lineage from that 2002-present championship.
