The NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship traces to 1943, when NWA founder Paul "Pinkie" George awarded the inaugural title to Ken Fenelon in Iowa, making it one of the oldest lineages in the sport. It became an alliance-wide title after the NWA's 1948 formation and passed through the Oklahoma, Tennessee and Gulf Coast territories, with Danny Hodge holding a record seven reigns including a 1,532-day run. New Japan Pro-Wrestling controlled it through the 1980s and 1990s, when it briefly formed part of the J-Crown. The title was abandoned in 1989, revived in 1995, deactivated again in 2017, and brought back by the modern Lightning One-era NWA in 2022.
