The NWA National Heavyweight Championship began in 1980 as a top singles title of the Georgia territory (Georgia Championship Wrestling), held early on by the likes of Tommy Rich, Paul Orndorff and Ted DiBiase. It was unified into the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship in 1986 and deactivated, then reactivated in 1997 and carried through the independent NWA before becoming a marquee title of the modern, Lightning One-era NWA. Phill Shatter holds the longest reign at 763 days. It is treated as one continuous NWA lineage despite its territorial origins and 1986-1997 dormancy.
