From March 2021 it was unified with the Intercontinental title and defended as the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship, until New Japan reverted the belt to its original name in January 2026 and folded those reigns back into this lineage. Hiroshi Tanahashi holds the record with eight reigns, ahead of Kazuchika Okada with seven; Okada also owns the longest single reign at 720 days. Tatsumi Fujinami, a fixture of the late 1980s and 1990s, sits on six.
